Trådar överallt

Trådar överallt. Ja, det var så det kändes när jag hade stickat klart mina tvåändsstickade halvvantar. 5 fingrar à 2 trådar per finger är lika med 10 trådar - per vante! Så dom fick ligga ett tag innan lusten att avsluta dom infann sig.

Threads everywhere. Well, at least that is what it felt like when I had finished knitting my twined knitting half mittens. 5 fingers, and 2 threads per finger equals 10 threads per mitten. So it took a while before I felt like finishing them by sewing in all the ends.

 

Såhär ser dom ut färdiga. Dom ser inte mycket ut för världen, grå och oansenliga med ett diskret krusmönster på muddarna. Men dom kommer att värma skönt när det börjar bli kallt ute.

This is what they look like finished. They don't look much to the world, grey and very plain with a very discrete cuff pattern. But they are thick and dense, so they will be warm and comfy when the autumn arrives.  

Handen har 5 fingrar...

När man stickar fingrar så står det att man skall lägga upp så och så många nya maskor mellan fingrarna. Jag brukar göra en provisorisk uppläggning med nya maskor då, eftersom jag tycker att det blir snyggare, när jag sedan skall plocka upp maskorna. När det är dags att sticka nästa finger så tar jag bort tråden och plockar upp maskorna. Det har inte blivit helt perfekt här - det var ju trots allt det första gången jag gör så när jag stickar tvåändsstickning, men vem sjutton tittar mellan fingrarna:)

When you knit the fingers on a pair of mittens, the pattern usually tell you to cast on so and so many stitches between the fingers. I usually use a provisional cast on when I do this, and when it's time to knit the next finger I'll just remove the thread and pick up the live stitches. It's not perfect here - it is after all my first try with this using the twined knitting technique, but then again - who on earth would look how it looks between the fingers:)

Jag är fortfarande oense med författarna till Selbu häftet. 56 är inte samma sak som 61, och även om jag inte har problem med att öka 5 m första varvet, så tycker jag ändå att det är konstigt att det inte står i häftet.

I still disagree with the author of the Selbu mitten leaflet about the number of stitches to cast on for these mittens. The instructions says cast on 56, then on the first row of the chart there are 61 stitches, and not one word in the instructions about increasing in the last row of the ribbing or first row of the pattern.

Having said that, it is almost hypocrisy to complain about lack of instructions, when you are going to ignore them anyway. This is how I knit thumbs. When you come to the thumb, the instructions usually ask you to put the stitches for the thumb on a stitch holder, and then to cast on new stitches in order to continue with the mitten. However, this is what I usually do when I knit the thumb. I take some waste yarn and use this to knit one row over the thumb stitches, and then I slip those back on the right needle, before I continue with the pattern as it is written. In the end when I’m done with the mitten, I will go back and remove the waste yarn, thus having live stitches to pick up and knit the thumb with.

 Fast egentligen är det ju hårklyveri att först klaga på uteblivna stickanvisningar när man ändå struntar i dom som finns. I instruktionerna står det att man skall sätta av tummaskorna på en hjälpsticka och sedan lägga upp nya. Så gör inte jag, eftersom jag tycker att det här är mycket lättare. Sticka över tummaskorna med ett annat garn (den blåa randen på bilden). Flytta sedan tillbaka de nyss stickade maskorna till höger sticka, fortsätt sedan att sticka enligt mönster. När du är klar med vanten, gå tillbaka till tummen och dra bort garnet du använde för att sticka över tummaskorna, plocka sedan upp maskorna och sticka klart tummen. Visst var det mycket enklare?
